How can I tell where my roof is leaking from?
Water often travels along rafters before it drips, so the stain on your ceiling may be some distance from the actual hole. Check the loft with a torch during or after rain for damp timbers or daylight. A roofer can trace the source from inside and out.
Is a small damp patch on the ceiling an emergency?
Not usually, but it should be checked within days. It becomes an emergency if water is dripping, near electrics, or the ceiling is bulging or sagging.
What are the most common causes of roof leaks?
Slipped or cracked tiles, failed lead flashing around chimneys and roof windows, cracked ridge mortar, blocked gutters and worn flat roof felt.
